Community Service Initiative Group 5: Fun learning Aid

Updated: Jun 28, 2019

Inspire to help Orang Asli children improve by providing quality education with an interactive learning activity.

For the first for weeks (after we were assigned to Group 5: Fun learning Aid), our group divided task in 4 categories being:

- English

- Art

- Science

- Maths

4-5 students were assigned to each sub group and were tasked to come up with multiple (minimum of 2) interactive wall mounted learning activity of their respective sub group.

For my group, we decided on English and had 5 group members. We came up with 2 different wall activities with different advancements and levels. We tired to make the wall activities as interactive as possible and also cost friendly. After our first presentation, a selection of one wall activity is chosen and changes have to be made accordingly.

Planning stages with my group took up a minimum of 2 hours.

During the first meeting with our lecturer (that lasted around 40 minutes), we discussed matters such as what materials to use, budget, size of each board according to size of walls given for installation and even transportation. We were granted access to most of the equipment and facilities in Taylor's University.

When I got home on the same day, I decided to map out the sizing of the boards according to the wall size. I wanted to plan this out quickly, as it was one of the begging steps of progress and other groups also depended on this. I spend around 30 minutes on this.

After this, my group decided to collect and buy materials needed for the project. We placed a box outside of our class room to collect old water bottles for the caps, and I personally drove my group-mates out to purchase other materials. This was all done within 1 hour and 30 minutes.

After realizing the amount of water bottles collected were much to little for our entire project, a few group members, myself included went to look for more. We went around campus asking strangers to spare us their used water bottles. This step took around 2 whole hours, but we finally got the proper amount of water bottles.

We then proceed to lazer cut our materials to the appropriate shape and sizes. This process began with autocad planning, and then using the lazer cut machine on campus. We spend 3 hours on this process.

This process was followed by printing and colouring of the boards. We spend at least 2 hours working on photoshop and then like before, I drove my group mates out to get printing done and then we meet up to start the production process. On the first day of production, we spend at least 5 hours painting each alphabet.

Then on the following production process, we hand stuck each and every alphabet onto a water bottle cap. This process took around 2 hours.

After that, we finalized our boards by attaching the hand made and spray painted baskets and the boards with sent off for installation. Finalizing process took around 4 hours.

With extra time, I personally also helped other groups (like the maths group) with producing their boards, vice versa. I spend at least 1 hour helping the other group out.
